June 3rd - 6pm - City Hall Rotunda.
The Dames family is going to be present as we have a small ceremony thanking them for the donation of the mail wagon. If you can, please come out and support the OHS and say 'thanks' to the family for their donation.
Follow-up. We had a very good turnout for the dedication of the mail wagon. We had over 20 Dames family members and several folks from the City and the OHS. Thanks to all that made this a special event.
Quarterly meeting - Monday June 7th - 6:30pm
Hope you can make it as our guest speaker is Pat Swinger. Pat is going to project some of the more historically significant and "humorous" documents that were recently part of the archiving project for everyone to see.
Announcements - from June 7, 2010 meeting.
Omer Dames’ mail wagon is now on display in the rotunda of City Hall. Last Thursday we had a short dedication and presented the family with a letter of thanks for their donation.
The printing press will be headed to the County’s new Heritage Museum the end of this month. It will be on display, as well as a selection of carpenter’s tools from our collection, when the Museum opens in September. So the O’Fallon Historical Society will be well represented!
Jim Frain persuaded his company, JRS Services, Inc., to provide us with prints of the more than 3,000 photos we now have in digital form for our archiving project. Next winter our archiving project will focus on sorting, identifying and labeling those prints as well as developing an inventory schedule for the museum. Bet you can’t wait!
It’s about time to switch out some of the displays in the museum. Here are some possibilities: · O’Fallon Volunteer Fire Department (we now have tons of photos) · Ollie Hibbeler’s collection of arrowheads and ancient artifacts · Advertising pages from the 1925 Fair held in O’Fallon · O’Fallon Civic Club Please let us know what your preference would be plus any other ideas you might have.
We now have another original log from Jacob Zumwalt’s Fort. A direct descendant of Jacob, Dennis Foster, helped us retrieve the log from the barn where it’s been stored ever since it was hauled out to Baltimore by one of his family members. It arrived over the weekend, thanks to Cheryl Hibbeler and DTS Trucking. It will be on display in Heald House and, eventually, in the interpretive center for the Fort.
The Historical Society is teaming up with the Veteran’s Commission and Randy Murray of Hometown Heroes to videotape oral histories from our area veterans. On Saturday, June 5th, a dozen or so WWII veterans were videotaped at the V.F.W. Hall. Their videos will be edited and displayed during the Heritage and Freedom Festival. In addition, the City of O’Fallon has offered their technical support in helping us videotape our long-time residents on various aspects of O’Fallon’s history. We’ll be starting these the last week in July so if you would like to be interviewed, or know someone who should be, please let us know.
Fort Zumwalt rebuilding project
The first phase of rebuilding the "fort" is almost complete. The building is up, the roof is on and the OCF is starting phase two and three which is the completion of the main building. Be sure to stop by Fort Zumewalt Park and see the progress.
